GROWING JACARANDA TREE

Introduction

It is a popular tree that is widely grown throughout the highlands. Jacaranda trees do well in most soils except waterlogged soils. They are deep-rooted trees. 

     

         Description of Jacaranda trees

It is a deciduous tree that grows to 20m in height with branches spreading with a light crown. They have a bark pale grey and smooth. The branches are rough and peel off with age. Jacaranda trees have compound leaves with a feathery stalk of 40cm with up to 30 pairs of pinnae with little pointed leaflets. Flowers of jacaranda trees are blue-violet in clusters the flower is bell-shaped to 4cm. The flower is usually on the bare tree before leaf growth. Jacaranda tree also has rounded fruits, and woody capsules to 7cm they are brown-black when matured. The capsules can hang on the tree for up to 2years. 

     Propagating and management

To propagate young jacaranda trees use seedlings and wildlings. The seeds germinate at a rate of 30_ 50%. The seeds planted per bag are 63000_ 80000. The jacaranda seeds should not be treated. Germinate fresh seeds for best production and good quality growth. During growth the trees require the following practices for good growth; pollarding, Lopping, coppicing, and pruning. Jacaranda trees do not require intercropping.
