There are different varieties of dragon fruits. Dragon fruit has lots of nutritional value in the human body.

 Land preparation and Planting

Dragon fruit can be grown in a wide variety of soils however the best is sandy soils with good organic matter that is well-drained. For dragon fruit cultivation, the soil pH ranges between 5.5 to 7.0. The suitable temperature for growth ranges between 65° and 80°F. Any temperatures under 32F will injure the plant with time since it is a cactus.

The land should be deeply plowed to a fine tilth and weed-free. Before planting apply any well-decomposed manures at a proportional ratio.

The best method of propagation for Dragon fruit is by cuttings. About 20cm length of cuttings should be used for planting on the farm. The grower is advised to pile up the cuttings two days before the potting. Dragon fruit can also be propagated by seeds but they are not suitable for commercial purposes.

     Planting and Irrigation

For proper right growth and development of the plant, they should be supported by wooden or concrete columns. As the plant grows it forms aerial roots from the branches. Dragon fruits require less water as compared to other plants. However, they must be irrigated during planting, flowering, fruit development stage, and during the hot climatic conditions.

       Harvesting and Marketing

Dragon fruits are harvested when the skin color changes from bright green to red or pink. The best harvesting time is 3 to 4 days after the fruit has changed its skin color. An acre can produce 20kgs. Dragon fruit is highly demanded in India hence the farmer can grow it for export or commercial purposes making the farmer earn a very good profit.
