How to grow apples
Apple is a freshly grown fruit. It is mostly grown for sale when fresh and for commercialization.
An apple farm is also called an orchard which is a groove of Apple trees.
Apples do well in high altitude regions of between 1800m to 2800m above sea level.
Apples require minimal rainfall since high rainfall amounts are not suitable due to the fungal diseases that are prone to apples
The most suitable soil to grow apples is loamy soil because it is well drained has good depth and its a pH between 5.5 to 6.5. Clay soil is not suitable to grow apples since it is not well drained. Irrigation is also a key factor during the growth of apples.
Land Preparation
Plowing should start to obtain the required depth and remove all the weeds. Additionally, the appropriate manures and fertilizers are also done during the preparation of land for high production and good market.
The farmer should dig holes with the appropriate and required width, length, and depth also. The soil that is taken out should be mixed with manure and the appropriate farm lime for high production rates.
Let the soil sit for at least 2 weeks before planting this enables the soil to increase more nutrients which are best for the apple plants.
Adding manures, farm lime, and also greenly fresh mulches prepares the soil and maintains it.
Young apple trees need lots of water hence should be watered regularly and deeply at least 3 times a week this enables the roots of the apple plant to develop strong and fresh.
Planting is done at the center of the holes.
Management of an Apple Farm
Using the appropriate manure and the appropriate farm lime should be highly considered. The farmer should avoid excessive application of fertilizers since it’s not good for an apple plant.
The Apple trees should be watered regularly. The best method for irrigating an apple farm is drip irrigation and sprinkler method. Mulches that are green and fresh should be put around the apple plant to retain the soil moisture of the farm.
Pruning during summer is preferred to reduce the leaf area and also not prune heavily.
Controlling weeds is advisable in an orchard for high production and a good market.
Weeds in an apple farm can be controlled by many methods, for example adding fresh mulches around the plant, pulling out using hang, or using the hand equipment tools used for harvesting also tilling helps control weeds.
Spraying weedicides in the right amount aids control of weeds and some pests. Although mulches help control pests on the farm also.
Harvesting
Apples are ready for harvesting when the skin color has changed or deepened. While ripe the fruits should come out easily away from the plant, hence showing it is harvesting time.
It’s advisable to harvest apples during the weedy season. The Best method during the harvesting time is using the rolling method where the apples are turned upside down to avoid bruising and spoilage.
Picking by hand can also be used but it is suitable if the fruit is being harvested for consumption purposes. Harvested apples should be kept carefully in crates that are spacious and clean to attract buyers and consumers.
The Apple fruit takes 130-150 days to mature after the blooming stage depending on the variety grown.
Per season an acre of apple farm trees can produce 700 to 8000 apples.
The harvesting method should be taken keenly to meet consumer demand.
After harvesting the apples should be stored in well-ventilated stores to enable long storage potential and to avoid spoilage before reaching the market.
